"Lake Murray Bass"
The weather is brisk, to say the least, when Shaw hits one of the South’s best bass lakes in early spring. Wind roars, waves roll, but on Lake Murray in South Carolina the largemouths and stripers come aboard anyway. Shaw fishes with Al Odom, national director of the popular Fishers of Men tournament trail.
"Everglades Snook"
It’s like fishing in a labyrinth, but if you can find your way into the mangrove maze out of Everglades City, Florida – and find your way back at the end of the day – the prize can be a gleaming catch of snook and Goliath grouper. Glades guide Bill Miller is the wizard who helps Shaw sort it all out.
"Bienville Bass"
The dog days of August might not be your first pick for largemouth angling in the deep South. But at Bienville Plantation in Florida, where the sun blazes and moss hangs in the liveoaks like boiled spinach, Shaw and fisheries manager Jeff Blanton foil big bass with a finesse flipping technique.
"Delta Reds"
Redfish abound in the dark channels that wind through the canebrake of the Mississippi Delta. But the fishing can be a puzzle because of tropical storms that march through, roiling the water. In the wake of a three-day blow, Shaw’s young guide Michael Frenette finds the solution.
"Sugar Lake Largemouths"
Cross the Rio Grande at the village of Miguel Aleman, Mexico, and find your way down to Lago Azucar, alias Sugar Lake. You won’t find any fancy American-made bass resorts but you will find big bass and ample solitude in which to catch them. Shaw fishes Sugar with Texas expert Speedy Collett.
